My family is one such. that is, we often invent new machines and tools and items to make our own lives easier or give the family an advantage (which today no longer seems to matter).

grandad was a maintenance man, uncles and dad were engineers and artists... functioning in the world outside of real modern times is to make things, improve them, and hand them down the family.

the idea that everything comes from above and down is a farce in many ways. often the smarter person sees soemthing that someone else is using, then notes and expands on it as if it was their own (taking credit).

a sea going family with skills and boredom on ships over long periods with nothing to do makes for the perfect conditions to work out problems experimentally over time and adjust a lifetime project of some family of navigators..

what we dont realize is that an aweful lot of stuff gets invented from assembling knowlege. even i am working on stuff in medicine and other areas as a side hobby (and through the freindships of those who are expected to produce, and so they proxy me).

one only has to look as scrimshaw and such carvings to realize that there is great art and skill among common humans on ship. and for every 100 of those that show art and such skill there is one or two that combine that with engineering.

heck, the history of knots and seamen is a testimony to the bordedoem and desire to recreate to something useful rather than pure entertainment with no later value.Artfldgrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13594241837693535704noreply@blogger.com
